  5. CHESS LIFE is published by the not-for-profit U.S. Chess Federation whose
  6. mission is to promote chess in America. It offers something for everyone,
  7. ranging from beginner to expert, and each month some 70,0000 members devour
  8. nearly 100 pages of games, news, and instruction.

  10. There are notices for hundreds of tournaments held in every nook and cranny
  11. of the country, postal events, discounts on equipment, and updated rating

  14. In 1993 a great magazine got even better. To spur newstand sales Chess Life
  15. snagged an exclusive new feature aptly named "Fighting Chess" by Gary
  16. Kasparov, the first world champion ever to pen a regular column in its pages.

  18. In his debut Kasparov dissected his daring Queen sacrifice in the opening of
  19. his third match game against Anatoly Karpov in 1990. The pundits were stunned
  20.  by this novelty which led, after mistakes by both sides, to a draw on move
  21. 53.

  23. The second article dwelt on the role of psychology in game 11. "In a long
  24. match of 24 games it is physically impossible to play one new opening after
  25. another," noted Kasparov, who made a risky sacrifice to confute "Karpov's
  26. rather dry style, which was frankly tedious and uninteresting for me."

  28. His third article showed how the same gamble worked two years later against a
  29. different opponent who was ready for him. "Neither side made a mistake up to
  30. move 21," wrote Kasparov, who pounced on an error while pointing out to
  31. readers the right line which would have forced him to settle for a draw.

  33. His fourth article in April was unprecedented. With detailed notes spread
  34. over four issues of Chess Life, the likes of which have never been seen, he
  35. analyzed the first 29 moves of an exciting TV game which proceeded slowly at
  36. two moves a week where he was in trouble against Spanish viewers. "I never
  37. played a game in my life which demanded such time and strength," he
  38. confessed.

  40. His eighth article offered a compelling argument for why pros must shake free
  41. of amateur control. The outcome of this struggle is still unclear.
